A 5th-century sky palace built on top of a 200-metre volcanic rock, with terraced water gardens at the base, celestial maiden frescoes halfway up the cliff, a mirror wall inscribed by centuries of pilgrims, and a summit panorama across the Cultural Triangle plain that makes the 45-minute climb immediately and completely worthwhile. Go early to beat both the heat and the tour groups.
+ Dambulla Cave Temple Complex
Five natural granite caves that have been painted continuously for over 2,000 years – floor to ceiling Buddhist iconography in vivid colour, over 150 statues including reclining Buddhas carved from the rock, and the particular atmosphere of a site that is genuinely ancient rather than restored to look it. Spend more time here than you think you need.
+ Cultural Triangle Rural Drive
The drive between the two sites passes through the flat, ancient landscape of the north-central plains – rice paddies, ancient irrigation tanks, roadside temples, and the easy rhythms of rural Sri Lankan life that give context to the monumental heritage on either side of it.
