The great stupas – Ruwanwelisaya, Abhayagiri, Jetavanaramaya – surround it on a scale that reframes what ‘ancient civilisation’ actually means.
+ Ancient Monastic Complexes
The ruins of monastic complexes that once housed thousands of monks and served as centres of Buddhist learning across Asia – Abhayagiri, Jetavanaramaya, and the various meditation gardens and bathing pools of the ancient city – give Anuradhapura its astonishing depth. Exploring by bicycle (recommended and available at the site) lets you cover the ground at the right pace.
+ Isurumuniya Rock Temple
A smaller, more intimate site on the edge of the ancient city’s reservoir – its sacred lotus-filled pond, rock-cut cave shrines, and the famous ‘Isurumuniya Lovers’ carved in the 6th century with a delicacy that makes it one of the finest sculptures in Sri Lanka’s artistic heritage.
