Tour 12 – Tea Plantation & Hill Country Tour

A highland day built around Ceylon tea – the industry that transformed the central highlands, still producing what many consider the world’s finest black tea, and still best understood from inside a working estate on a cool mountain morning. The landscape is extraordinary, the factory is genuinely fascinating, and the tasting at the end of it makes every cup of tea you have at home feel slightly less satisfying for the next six months.

Highlights

+ Working Tea Factory Tour & Tasting

The complete tea-making process from freshly plucked leaf to brewed cup – withering, rolling, fermentation, firing, and grading in a colonial-era factory where the smells at each stage are as educational as the explanation. The final comparative tasting of different estate grades is the most popular part of the visit and the one that changes how people drink tea for the rest of their lives.

+ Tea Plucking with Estate Workers

Walking the plantation rows alongside experienced pluckers – the ‘two leaves and a bud’ technique executed at extraordinary speed, the physical demands of the work immediately apparent when you attempt it yourself, and the warmth of a genuinely direct encounter with the people who produce one of the world’s most-consumed beverages.

+ Highland Scenic Roads & Viewpoints

The drive through Sri Lanka’s tea country is one of the most continuously beautiful road journeys in Asia – the geometry of the tea estates covering every hillside, roadside waterfalls appearing without warning, and the occasional viewpoint where the entire highland landscape becomes visible at once. The highland air above 1,500 metres is a genuine physical shock after the lowland heat.
