Tour 15 – Handunugoda Tea Estate & Cinnamon Tour

One of Sri Lanka’s most genuinely unusual culinary day tours – combining the world’s only producer of Virgin White Tea with the cinnamon plantation landscapes of the Koggala area and a stop at Galle Fort for the afternoon. Three completely different experiences, all on the same stretch of the south coast, and each one more interesting than it sounds on paper.

Highlights

+ Handunugoda Estate & Virgin White Tea

The world’s only commercially produced Virgin White Tea is harvested here – a tea so rare and delicate that it’s picked only in morning dew by workers wearing gloves to avoid finger contact with the buds. The guided tasting comparison between the estate’s standard Ceylon grades and this extraordinary tea at the end is the kind of experience that reframes the entire concept of what tea can be.

+ Ceylon Cinnamon Plantation Walk

True cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) is native to Sri Lanka and completely different from the cassia sold as ‘cinnamon’ in most Western supermarkets – walking through a working plantation, learning to identify it, and watching the traditional hand-peeling process that produces the familiar quills makes the spice section of every future supermarket aisle feel permanently different.

+ Galle Fort Afternoon

The south coast’s finest cultural stop pairs naturally with the coastal hinterland experiences of the morning – the UNESCO-listed Dutch sea fortress, its rampart walk, boutique galleries, and independent restaurants providing an excellent afternoon before the drive back.
